How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal (Plus Aftercare Tips)

Candela GentleMax Pro laser hair removal session

A little preparation goes a long way with laser hair removal. Follow this checklist and you'll get better results from every session — with happier skin afterward. (These are general guidelines; we'll give you personalized instructions at your consultation.)

Before Your Appointment

Two weeks before

  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning — including self-tanner and tanning beds. Laser works best, and is safest, on untanned skin.
  • Stop waxing, plucking, and threading. The laser needs the hair root in the follicle to work. Shaving is fine — it leaves the root intact.

24 hours before

  • Shave the treatment area. This lets the laser energy go to the follicle, not the hair above the skin.
  • Skip retinoids, acids, and exfoliants on the treatment area.

Day of

  • Arrive with clean, product-free skin — no lotion, deodorant, or makeup on the area.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing over the treatment area.

After Your Session

  • Expect mild redness — like a light sunburn — for a few hours. The GentleMax Pro's cooling system keeps this minimal.
  • Cool, don't heat: skip hot showers, saunas, and intense workouts for 24 hours.
  • Protect from sun: SPF 30+ on treated areas for at least two weeks.
  • Be gentle: no exfoliating, scrubbing, or harsh actives for a few days.
  • Don't panic at "regrowth": treated hairs shed over 1–3 weeks — it's the treatment working, not new hair.
Consistency is everything with laser. Hair grows in cycles, so keeping your scheduled sessions — usually 4–8 weeks apart — is the single biggest factor in your results.
