If you have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), you may know the frustration of hirsutism — coarse, dark hair appearing on the face, chin, neck, chest, or abdomen. It's one of the most common and most distressing symptoms of PCOS, and it's also one of the most treatable. Here's what you should know.
Why PCOS Hair Growth Is Different
PCOS often raises levels of androgens (male-pattern hormones), which can convert fine, soft vellus hair into thicker terminal hair in androgen-sensitive areas. This means two things: the hair tends to be coarse and persistent, and new follicles can activate over time as long as hormone levels remain elevated.
That's why shaving, waxing, and threading can feel like a losing battle — they only remove hair temporarily, while the underlying hormonal signal keeps recruiting new growth.
What Actually Helps
1. Work with your doctor on the hormonal side
Managing the underlying hormone imbalance (through whatever approach you and your physician choose) helps slow the activation of new follicles. Hair removal works best alongside medical management — we're not doctors, and we always encourage clients to address the root cause with their healthcare provider.
2. Electrolysis for permanent results
Electrolysis is especially well suited to PCOS hair because it permanently destroys each treated follicle — regardless of hormone levels, hair color, or skin tone. Once a follicle is treated, it cannot regrow hair, even if androgens remain elevated. For facial hirsutism in particular, electrolysis is widely considered the gold standard.
3. Laser for larger areas
If you have dense growth over larger areas, laser hair removal can dramatically reduce it in fewer sessions. Many clients with PCOS combine laser (to clear volume) with electrolysis (to permanently finish, and to catch lighter hairs laser can't target). Not sure which fits? See our electrolysis vs. laser comparison.
You Deserve Judgment-Free Care
We know firsthand how personal this is. Many of our clients have spent years hiding facial hair, plucking daily, or avoiding photos. At FabElectrolysis, you'll never need to explain or apologize — we've supported many clients with PCOS, and our consultations are private, warm, and pressure-free.
Hormonal hair growth is not your fault, and it's not something you have to live with. With the right plan, it's very treatable.
